MANCHESTERMUSIC.CO.UK LIVE REVIEW...

10th October 2007

Bone-box, on the other hand, make music to drink whisky to, but are more likely to pick you up and put you back on your feet than allow wallowing in any hobo sorrows. A nine-piece, they squeezed onto Night and Day's small stage dressed in black and looking like Rocket From The Crypt, but quickly proved that playing the drums with a maraca is equal to (if not better than) traditional snare. Although epic is a word sorely overused in today's rock criticism, the intense strings were just that, with a mariachi brass section ready to blow your brains out of your ears. The orchestra sound that Bone-box emitted was a far cry from any of today's Arcade Fire copycats, as the songs were belted out with blue collar gusto; frontman Jay points his finger and shakes a fist while preaching the big band-country manifesto in gruff tones. He had gravitas, but corners were softened by lapsteel, banjo and acoustic guitar; the whole operation being but a few production tweaks away from a Bond theme. Also sounding a lot like Tom Waits' most bombastic material, Bone-box gave a performance that really earned its applause.

MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 'DO YOU FEEL YOU'VE BEEN WARNED?' REVIEW...

2nd October 2007

Bone-box are from Manchester, a fact difficult to believe from the sound of 'Do You Feel You’ve Been Warned?' Knocking around in the leftfield of the north west music scene for a while – this isn’t another Northern Quarter indie band of no particular hair do – Bone-box are too cool and too detached to be swept along by fads or gimmicks – thank goodness for that.  Nestling somewhere between Tinderstick’s Stuart Staples and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner is Jay Taylor – a man who cuts the shape on stage of a dapper Lee Van Cleef in the dustbowl of a Spaghetti Western  - a voice that is poetic and reflective, part Desperado part High Plains Drifter – yet at the same time strangely optimistic. With a warm and sumptuous production and pedal steel guitar that enhances the lyrical roll, contrasting nicely to Taylor’s vocal – things don’t get much better than this. Bone Box are destined for bigger things – and 'Do You Feel You’ve Been Warned?' proves they are on the road to achieving them.

GLASSWERK 'DO YOU FEEL YOU'VE BEEN WARNED?' REVIEW...

29th August 2007

Bone Box are from Manchester, a fact difficult to believe from the sound of ‘Do you feel you been warned?’ with its soaked in Midwestern melancholy and brooding prose.

In a climate of convey belt singer songwriters Bone-box represents a true pulse-someone writing beautifully constructed tales of the human psyche; like a busker you pass in the street, who happens to play exactly what’s on you mind and completely sorts out your day.

Waits & Morrissey, all skulk in the dark corners created by Bone-box, and even Cash’s- later output gets brushed against.
Jay Taylor’s vocals, worn from life complement the effortless playing and where some may see the inclusion of trumpets as strange and unusual it fits and makes complete sense alongside the pedal steel guitar that just pulls and pulls.

Bone-box have a put together an honest and simple collection of songs on ‘Death of a Prize Fighter’ and ‘Do you feel you been warned?’ is one of the many dirty little gems.
